Lambert Wins Build Oklahoma Award for Pawnee Schools Saferoom
Lambert Construction Company received a 2014 Build Oklahoma General Contractors Award for the Pawnee Public Schools Saferoom and Indoor Playground. The award was presented at the 75th annual meeting of The Associated General Contractors (AGC) of America, Oklahoma-Building chapter, on January 17, 2015.
“We’re very proud to have been a part of this project,” said Stephen Mitchell, Vice President at Lambert Construction. “It is unique and interesting as a construction project, but more importantly it will serve to protect Pawnee students and teachers for decades to come.”
Designed to withstand an EF-5 tornado, the building was completed on September 9, 2014. The project was funded by a $1.6 million bond issue approved by Pawnee voters in November 2012.
The 7,853 sq. ft. dome-shaped structure is, first and foremost, an ICC-500 standard-compliant saferoom. Situated next to Pawnee Elementary School, it has enough space to hold 1,571 occupants – more than the student and teacher population of the entire school district.
With its unique design and construction, the building is rated to withstand winds of up to 250 mph. Its dome shape – with no corners or flat walls – helps the structure deflect wind. Exterior walls are nine inches of steel-reinforced concrete that rise continuously from foundation up through the domed ceiling. The school district also plans additional upgrades, including an emergency generator, so that the building can be used as an emergency response center during disasters in the region. When the weather is merely inclement – raining or snowing, too hot or too cold, but not severe – the space also serves as an indoor playground.
Lambert Construction was assisted by several different organizations throughout the project, including Pawnee Public Schools and the architectural firm, Property Arts, Inc. The Lambert project team was headed by Stephen Mitchell, Project Manager, and Shannon Gilchrist, Project Engineer.
Selection for the AGC Award was based on submission of descriptions and photographs that highlighted the purposes of the facility, the construction process, and the people and organizations involved.
The AGC of Oklahoma is a statewide non-profit organization for construction professionals. Part of the national organization, it provides training, education, and technology programs for members. Lambert Construction has been an AGC member for more than 55 years and has won numerous awards from the organization.
